Brain Waves & Sound Healing: What Happens When the Mind Begins to Slow Down?

Have you ever come out of a sound healing journey feeling as though you have been somewhere else?


Perhaps you weren’t quite asleep, but you weren’t fully awake either. Time may have felt different. Thoughts became less important. Your body felt heavy, spacious or deeply relaxed, and you may have drifted between images, memories, sensations and periods where there seemed to be very little thought at all.


One way we can begin to understand this experience is through brainwave states.

Our brains are constantly producing electrical activity. When this activity is measured using an EEG (electroencephalogram), different patterns of frequency can be observed.

These are commonly grouped into five main bands: Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta.


Importantly, we never have just one brainwave operating at a time. The brain is far more complex than that.



Different frequencies are happening simultaneously across different areas of the brain. However, particular patterns can become more prominent depending on whether we are concentrating, relaxing, meditating, daydreaming or sleeping.


So what does each state do?


Gamma: Processing, integration & high-level awareness

Approximately 30 Hz and above

Gamma is the fastest of the commonly discussed brainwave bands.

Gamma activity is associated with higher-level information processing, attention, learning, perception and the integration of information across different regions of the brain.

You might think of Gamma as the brain working at high resolution - taking in information, connecting it and making sense of what is happening.


Gamma isn't necessarily the state we're trying to remain in throughout a deeply restful sound journey. A healing space is often an invitation to move away from constant processing and towards something quieter.


Beta: Thinking, doing & everyday consciousness

Approximately 13–30 Hz


Beta is the state many of us spend a large portion of our waking day in.

It is associated with:

  • active thinking

  • decision-making

  • problem-solving

  • conversation

  • planning

  • external attention

  • concentration


Beta is incredibly useful. We need it to work, drive, organise our lives, communicate and get things done. The problem isn't Beta itself. The difficulty is that modern life can keep us in a very doing-oriented, mentally stimulated state for long periods of time.

Phones. Notifications. Work. Conversations. Decisions. Noise. Responsibilities.

When you first lie down for a sound journey, you may still be very much in this state.

Your mind might be saying:


What time is it?

Did I turn my phone off?

What am I making for dinner?

I need to remember to do that tomorrow…

This is completely normal.


One of the beautiful parts of a sound journey is simply giving the mind enough time and sensory space that it no longer needs to keep doing quite so much.


Alpha: The gateway into relaxation


Approximately 8–13 Hz

Alpha is associated with relaxed wakefulness.

It commonly becomes more prominent when we close our eyes, reduce external stimulation and settle into a restful state.


This is where I often think the first real settling of a sound journey begins.

You are still awake.

You can hear the bowls.

You can hear my voice.

You know that you are lying in the room.

But you're beginning to care a little less about everything happening outside of you.

Your breathing may soften.

The body may begin to feel heavier.

Thoughts may still come, but you don't necessarily need to follow them.


For many people, Alpha is the doorway between everyday thinking and deeper internal awareness.



And this is why I place so much importance on the beginning of a sound journey - allowing time to arrive, settle into the body, become aware of the breath and gradually transition away from the stimulation of the day. We don't need to force relaxation. We create the conditions that allow it.


Theta: The beautiful in-between state


Approximately 4–8 Hz

Theta is perhaps the brainwave state most frequently associated with deep relaxation, drowsiness and meditative states.


This is the fascinating territory between ordinary waking consciousness and sleep.

You may recognise it from those moments just before falling asleep when your thoughts stop behaving logically.


Images appear.

Memories surface.

Ideas seem to arrive from nowhere.

You may feel as though you are dreaming while still being faintly aware of the room around you.

During a sound journey some people describe:

  • vivid colours or imagery

  • dream-like experiences

  • memories surfacing

  • unusual body sensations

  • losing track of time

  • feeling as though they were asleep even though they could still hear everything

  • moments where their thoughts seemed to completely disappear


Some of these experiences can accompany that transition into deeply relaxed or dreamlike states.

A small study examining a singing bowl producing a 6.68 Hz beat - within the Theta range - found increased EEG activity around that beat frequency while participants listened. The researchers suggested this may have relevance to relaxation and meditation, although it was a small study and much more research is needed.


For me, Alpha into Theta is often the sweet spot of a sound healing journey.

Not because we need to achieve a particular number on an EEG machine, but because these states represent something we rarely give ourselves enough opportunity to experience:

being awake without needing to do anything.


Receiving rather than performing.

Listening rather than analysing.

Feeling rather than constantly thinking.


Delta: deep sleep and profound rest:


Approximately 0.5–4 Hz

Delta is the slowest of the main brainwave bands and is strongly associated with deep sleep in adults.



And yes - sometimes people fall asleep during my sound journeys and it's completely normal and ok.




If your body falls asleep in a space where it finally feels able to soften, perhaps sleep is exactly what it needed. You haven't failed the sound journey.

Your experience simply took you somewhere different. You might drift in and out several times, hearing the gong, disappearing somewhere, hearing my voice again, drifting away and returning as the journey changes. There doesn't need to be a right way to receive.


Sound doesn't have to 'force' the brain anywhere.


I think this distinction is important.

You may sometimes hear claims that a particular instrument or frequency automatically puts your brain into Theta or forces the nervous system into a specific state.

Human physiology is much more individual and complex than that.


So rather than thinking:

"This bowl makes your brain go into Theta," I prefer to think: Sound can help create an environment in which the mind and body are invited to settle.


The repetition.

The vibration.

The pauses.

The changing harmonics.

The voice.

The rhythm.

The absence of conversation.

The permission to close your eyes.

And perhaps most importantly - having nowhere you need to be for the next hour.

Together, these can create the conditions for the mind to gradually become quieter.


The Journey Is in the Transition


This is something I find particularly beautiful about sound healing.

The purpose isn't necessarily to get somewhere.

It is experiencing the gradual transition from doing into being.

At the beginning you may still hear every sound individually.

A bowl.

A chime.

My voice.

The gong.

The ocean drum.

And somewhere along the way, you may stop listening to the individual instruments altogether.

There is simply sound.

Breath.

Body.

Awareness.

A journey.

And sometimes - for a few beautiful moments - almost nothing at all.

That is often where the deepest rest begins.
